The Collaborative Programs of Excellence in Autism (CPEA) Network conducts research to learn about the possible causes of autism, including genetics, immunological, and environmental factors, as well as diagnosis, early detection, behavioral and communications characteristics, and treatment of autism.
Established in 1997 by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communications Disorders (NIDCD) , the CPEAs are part of the international Network on the Neurobiology and Genetics of Autism.

Title: A Longitudinal Assessment of Behavior Problems, Puberty, and Epilepsy

Description: The primary aim is to investigate which children in a sample ascertained independently of epilepsy status develop seizures and whether there are changes in behavior or adaptive functioning that either precede or follow the development of seizures.

Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Second Year: Stability and Change in Syndrome Expression

Objectives. Increasing numbers of young children referred for a differential diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) necessitates better understanding of the early syndrome expression and the utility of the existing state-of-the art diagnostic methods in this population. Method. Out of 31 infants under the age of 2 years referred for a differential diagnosis, 19 were diagnosed with autism, and 9 with PDD-NOS when re-assessed at 3 years.
